Prima Colazione Desayuno ארוחת בוקר Breakfast

The first thing most Americans do in the morning is get up and have breakfast. In the United States, breakfast consists of a lot of sugar even though it is considered “the most important meal of the day.” The iconic American breakfast features pancakes, eggs, hash browns, and bacon. Usually the mountain of food is accompanied by coffee, tea, or orange juice. In other countries, that is not always the case. When I visited Italy for the first time, I found that breakfast consists of small pastries with a cappuccino because Italians will not drink cappuccinos after 11 am. The Italians are very strict about their coffee rules. Many people will stand at the bar to drink their coffee because it is more expensive to sit down.

In Cuba, or as I like to call it the land of many fruits, I tried papaya, watermelon, and honeydew juice for the first time. These are very classic and refreshing drinks to start the day. Poached eggs are taken to a new level in Israel with shakshuka. In this dish, the egg is poached directly in a spicy tomato sauce and pita bread is used to soak up the sauce. Also, bourekas are served all around Israel at any time of the day, but mostly in the morning. The crispy puff pastry is filled with potatoes or cheese for the perfect one bite snack.

When you identify your daily cheese consumption and multiple that by 10, you now understand what having breakfast is like in Bulgaria. Also, if you like cucumber and tomatoes, this is the perfect travel destination for you. Trust me when I say you will eat cucumber-tomato salad with every meal. I didn’t think it was possible to get tired of my two favorite ingredients, but I was wrong. I like to think that every place I have visited has its own culinary identity, which is not limited to just lunch and dinner. Breakfast can be the “the most important meal of the day” all around the globe.
